Once upon a time...

This year marks 150 years since the Danish storyteller Hans Christian Andersen's passed away, yet his tales remain very much alive.

Fairy tales are more than old stories about princes and princesses; they are small mirrors of life, giving us words for what can be hard to understand: Courage, fear, justice, and hope.

In fairy tales, we meet heroes both small and great, who must overcome dangers and trust their hearts. These are the same challenges our children face – learning to speak up, finding courage to try something new, or understanding that doing right isn't always easiest.

Fairy tales bring more than magic. They encourage us to face the unknown, to believe in goodness, and to understand that even the smallest hero can change the world.

Hellerup, Denmark

Join us in exploring five-and-a-half-year-old Eva's room, where colours are kept in browns and greens, creating a calming, soothing atmosphere.

This is a room designed for imaginative, open play, and outside distractions are kept at a minimum. In here, wooden toys dominate, alongside vintage furniture and a wall-to-wall rug, adding softness to the room – and keeping noise down from toys hitting the wooden floor underneath.

Explore Eva's room and take inspiration from natural materials and careful colour choices and see how a calm environment nurtures both rest and creative play.

A custom made desk is the perfect place for a visual display of some of Eva's toys, as well as a place for her to play. A homemade curtain allows for storage underneath.

The table top has been painted in a soothing green tone, that compliments the earthy, brown tones from most of Eva's toys beautifully.

On the table lies 'Skovlingerne i Dybeskov' from Gyldendal.

A basket full of soft pillows, blankets and Gyldendal's 'Den store Eventyrbog'.

A wooden play kitchen is also seen here – find a lovely, alternative wooden kitchen right here.

The bed is vintage, and filled with soft toys and pillows, including a large blue pillow from Studio Mini. Above the bed hangs a framed poster and a bowl.

"I believe magic happens when there's as few distractions as possible, allowing kids to use their imagination freely when playing".

– Sille, Eva's mom

A tower of six colourful balancing blocks from Stapelstein are stacked by the door, ready for all kinds of games.

On the door hangs a blue skirt on a junior hanger.

The new Harry Potter series 'Potter Mini', bathed in sunlight. This series is a collection of mini guides to Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione for younger readers.

A snippet of the large blue pillow is seen at the top.

The shelf works as storage for toys, books and Eva's things, including little baskets, suitcases and other keepsakes.

A 'September' postcard by Elsa Beskow is found on the pin board.

A wonderful knitted cactus sits on the radiator, next to a little bamboo box placed on 'Den store Eventyrbog for børn' from Gyldendal.

The classic children's book 'H. C. Andersens samlede Eventyr is out now in in a beautiful, new edition. The Danish queen, H.M Queen Margrethe 2. has written the foreword to this special edition.

Greens and browns make for a calm, earthy and inviting setting. Wooden toys are placed on the table, flanked by vintage wooden chairs.
